Necklace, Enamel on Copper, Sterling Silver

I began to think about a piece that would incorporate my exposure to Berber Jewelry of North Africa, especially Berber Jewelry of Morocco and the Jewish Berbers of the 19th/early 20th Century. “Conversation with the Matriarchs” is a necklace in Enamel and Silver that reflects my desire to honor women who were leaders in their cultures and were visible and venerated. Ornament can have a ceremonial role that transcends wealth and mere costume. By having a conversation with these historical jewels, I connect to those who came before, whose voices can no longer be heard or appreciated.
